Thomas Hanson and Anne Dorothea Minch
Anne Dorothea Minch and Thomas Hanson had seven children, all born before they married as well as two born to Annie earlier. They were:
Ann Minch, b: 1869, Maitland, New South Wales. No further records can be found for Ann.
William Charles Ames, b: 25th March 1871, Maitland, New South Wales; bap: 12th June 1871, St Josephs Roman Catholic Church, Maitland, New South Wales; d: 13th June 1936, Belmont, New South Wales; bur: 14 Jun 1936, Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales; m: 4th October 1902, Minmi, New South Wales, Margaret Victoria Price, d: 8th January 1939, Belmont, New South Wales; bur: 9th January 1939, Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales. William was said to have been raised by his maternal grandparents in Maitland. He would have been fifteen years of age when Anne Minch died and maybe old enough to be working on a property somewhere in the district, or in a mine. His whereabouts is unknown between his grandmother?s death, in 1886, and when he married in 1902. William Charles Ames was known as Charles Joseph Minch until his wife did a search for his birth certificate. I was wondering why Annie Hanson would have named her last child William when she had a living son named William Charles. The family story is that Annie did not recognise him as her son but somehow some of her later children were made aware of some of his birth details. It was Ivy Higginbottom, wife of his half brother William Hanson, who is credited with spreading the gossip about his illegitimacy. Annie, his mother then confessed to the fact that he had been born out of wedlock, but stated that his father?s name was William Charles Ames. This paternity is doubtful but on 10th September 1921, William had all Minch records, relating to himself and his family, changed to the name of Ames. Their marriage certificate has an amendment to the document in the margin reading:
In column 3 for Charles Joseph Minch read WilliamCharles Ames. In column 9 for Henry Minch read William Charles Ames and for Anne unknown read Hannah Minch. Declared by William Charles Ames, a party to the marriage on 20th Sept 1921.
It is ironic really, as all the children of Annie Minch and Thomas Hanson were illegitimate.
William and his wife Margaret took in a foster child, named Raymond Miller, as well as having four children of their own. They must have been caring people. Raymond was born in a Maternity home at Wickham to Ethel May Miller. He sadly passed away at the age of sixteen years of Pneumonia and Influenza. He is buried with them, as their son, Raymond Geofrey at Catherine Hill Bay.
